The rapid push toward “renewable” energy—while rooted in good intentions—may be creating new vulnerabilities, including rising costs and a less stable power grid. “That is exactly what we recently saw happen in Spain, when all of a sudden … the electricity went out … it was a wake-up call, because that was a preview of coming attractions,” he says. He also examines the global supply chain behind green technology, with a focus on China’s dominant role in producing solar panels and rare earth materials. For Cohen, this raises important questions about long-term U.S. energy independence and national security.
