Keynote luncheon speech. Chris Waller, Governor of the Federal Reserve System, provided a detailed assessment of current economic and inflation conditions and the Fed’s considerations as it deliberated on the conduct of monetary policy. In response to questions, he noted how his research had led him to believe inflation could be reduced without a substantial increase in the unemployment rate and indicated that he believed there would be an economic soft-landing without recession. Athanasios Orphanides moderated Waller’s speech and asked him several questions about the natural rate of interest and the Fed’s ideas about what would constitute neutral monetary policy.
