Thomas Sowell is a cultural icon and an intellectual inspiration for generations of Americans. To celebrate the enduring contributions of this legendary scholar, the Hoover Institution proudly organized the 2025 Thomas Sowell Creator Competition, open to all multimedia content creators. With creativity and skill, more than fifty entrants presented essential lessons from Thomas Sowell that Americans need to remember today.
Submissions amplified insights from Sowell’s books and articles as well as ideas expressed during his widely watched interviews. Check out the full playlist of Thomas Sowell on Uncommon Knowledge at: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLKruweaZqDNcTAPb0nBqGx-Ekl9k9ns-V
Creators showcased important lessons from Sowell’s work: the reality of trade-offs, the consequences of unconstrained visions of politics, and the hidden harms of seemingly gentle-sounding ideas like socialism.
This video is a winning submission called “Stage One” by Sebastian Gutierrez, which highlights Sowell’s insights on the unintended consequences of pursuing perfect outcomes in public policy. Amplifying Sowell’s call from Applied Economics to think “beyond stage one,” the winning entry offers Americans of all backgrounds and perspectives an enduring lesson in the reality of trade-offs.
