Energy for 500! CFACT Collegians Bring Jeopardy to Campus

Nuclear energy for $500? Fossil fuels for $300? How about a Daily Double on renewables?

By bringing a Jeopardy-inspired challenge to their campuses, two CFACT Collegians encouraged their peers to put their energy knowledge to the test, learn a few surprising facts, and walk away with a handful of candy.

Swapping a live studio television audience for a campus, Collegians Elliot Taylor at the University of Arizona and Dulce Yon at Sam Houston State University set up Jeopardy-style games with categories ranging from nuclear to solar energy. Students selected their categories and point values, answered trivia questions, and competed for bragging rights and prizes.

Wind Energy for $200! What do we call wind turbines built out at sea? The answer: Offshore wind farms! But there’s more beneath the surface. Offshore wind construction and increased vessel traffic can disrupt marine ecosystems, raising concerns about potential impacts on whales and other marine life.

At the University of Arizona, Taylor set up his colorful Jeopardy board in the campus mall, catching the attention of students passing by, with groups stopping to try their luck across multiple categories.

“The Jeopardy board attracted a lot of people!” Taylor said. “Lots of groups stopped and wanted to test their knowledge.”

While some students came ready to show off their energy expertise and leave with several pieces of candy, others walked away with a few new facts under their belts.

“I got a lot of ‘Oh! I didn’t know that!’ which is always encouraging to hear,” Taylor shared.

Meanwhile, at Sam Houston State University, Yon turned up the competition with a team-based version of Energy Jeopardy, complete with pizza.

Students split into teams and went head-to-head, battling for points and bragging rights. But one wrong answer could give the opposing team a chance to swoop in and steal the points.

“Students were competitive with the game and they knew a lot of the answers,” Yon said. “This event was fun to host, and I definitely would do it again.”

While nobody walked away with a Daily Double jackpot, students from both campuses left with something still worth a few points: a better understanding of the energy sources and environmental issues shaping the world around them.
