In a blatantly self-serving power move, California Democrats have cooked up a redistricting scheme they are marketing to voters as “leveling the playing field”, when in reality it serves to violate the state’s fifteen-year history of independent redistricting and disadvantage Republicans in the midterms and the next presidential election.
Proposition 50 will be on the ballot for California voters on November 4, and what Democrats are marketing as a move to even the playing field is a thinly veiled attempt to scheme for more power in Congress in the next midterm cycle and the 2028 presidential election.
Prop. 50 is a Democrat ploy to suspend the state’s independent redistricting process — a process that Californians voted for in Propositions 11 (2008) and 20 (2010) — just long enough to give Democrats an advantage in the midterms and the next presidential election.
The new proposed maps that will go into effect if Prop 50. passes are not only hastily redrawn mid-way through the Census, but the maps are strategically designed to bolster Democratic power in the House, with Democrats estimated to pick up five new seats if Prop. 50 passes.
According to California Democrats, the proposed new congressional district lines are “emergency maps” and “temporary”, with Democrats promising voters that after the 2030 Census they will allegedly hand power back to the independent Citizens Redistricting Commission.
On one hand California Democrats claim to see value in the voter-approved independent redistricting commission, but they are fighting to suspend the commission’s authority over redistricting temporarily just when President Donald Trump and Republicans are gaining ground in the state, making the new maps are nothing more than a power grab to stop Trump and the GOP.
In a CBS News interview on Oct. 26, California Governor Gavin Newsom — the leading Democratic contender for the 2028 presidential election — made it clear that Prop. 50 is intended to curb the power of President Donald Trump.
Newsom stated that Prop. 50 is “about the rule of law, and not the rule of Don”, referring to President Donald Trump, indicating that for all their marketing material on “leveling the playing field”, all Democrats care about is stopping Trump and conservatives.
“It’s about the future of this republic”, Newsom said. “I think it’s about, you know, what the founding fathers lived and died for, this notion of the rule of law, and not the rule of Don. This rule of popular sovereignty fundamentally, of co-equal branches of government, system of checks and balances.”
It is clear that the Democrats behind Prop. 50 are not at all interested in leveling the playing field, but instead staging a political coup. Polling shows that the largest majority of likely voters on Prop. 50 are planning to vote to “oppose Donald Trump”.
According to the latest CBS News/YouGov survey from Oct. 16-21, the largest share of California voters weighing in on Prop 50 — 51 percent — say the reason for their vote is to “oppose Donald Trump”. 11 percent say their vote on Prop 50 is to support Trump, and 38 percent say Trump is not a factor. Voters also admit that their vote on Prop 50 is largely to influence national politics, like the midterm elections and next presidential election, with 50 percent of voters saying the reason for their vote is national influence, while 45 percent say the incentive is about California issues, and 5 percent saying their vote is about local issues.
California voters are also blatantly aware of the way a yes vote on Prop. 50 would disadvantage rural communities while handing power to the cities and suburbs, with voters saying by 17 points — 38 percent to 21percent — that rural voters will lose power if Prop. 50 passes. Voters say by 31 points — 45 percent to 14 percent — that cities will gain power if Prop. 50 passes.
California Democrats’ scheme to suspend the states’ independent redistricting commission is emblematic of a larger scheme by Democrats to use every metric possible to wrench power from President Donald Trump and Republicans in Congress. Other states are also plotting to redraw their maps mid-cycle. In Virginia, Democrats are plotting to redraw district maps mid-cycle with the purpose of picking up new congressional seats, and New York and Maryland are eyeing similar plans. Democrats appear to be ready to do everything in their power to stop President Doanld Trump and amass as much power as possible in the midterms and the next presidential election if voters don’t push back.
