Influences of the SOMC and Monetarism in Europe and the United Kingdom. In this session, leading central bankers from the Swiss National Bank (Georg Rich), the Bundesbank (Axel Weber), European Central Bank (Otmar Issing) and Bank of England (Charles Goodhart) provided remarks on their experiences that echoed the important role of money in the conduct of monetary policy and some of the critical dilemmas they faced and the strategic decisions they made. These well-known global central bankers provided a rich dialogue and suggestions on how to achieve sound central banking. The panel was moderated by Charles Plosser, former President of the Federal Reserve Bank of Philadelphia.
